Heart of adoption

Have you ever adopted a pet? Whether it was a larger animal like a dog, or a small one like a fish, there’s an unmistakable feeling of joy. Adoption is wired into our DNA since we have all been adopted into God’s family.

When you accept Jesus into your life you accept the invitation into his family. You are a child of God. God calls us his sons and daughters.

Romans 8:14-17 (ESV)

“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.”

Adoption is a fundamental part of the Bible. God changed Abram’s name to Abraham, Sarai to Sarah. Jesus changed Simon to Peter and Saul to Paul. You might think just because He changed their names it doesn’t mean they were adopted? While, that might be true, when God changed their names He changed their lives.
Changing their names in this way God broke off attachments to their souls, to their lives. He broke off the old, the past mistakes, sins, and failures. God made them new.

As Christians, we believe we have been born again, washed clean. Just like the resurrection and baptism, we die as our old selves and come up born again and brand new.

This happens when we repent of our sins. It can be hard to break off the old but God has done it many times for others. He can do it for you.

If you haven’t accepted Jesus into your heart and life, repeat this simple prayer and be adopted into the family:

Lord, I ask for your forgiveness in my life. Forgive me of my sins and make me a new creation in you. Thank you for making me your son/daughter.

in your name, amen.
